Bands Sounds Links Me Home |
Phenomenal. If I were asked for one word to describe Lavay Smith and Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, that would be it. This tight, amazing, nine-piece band hails from California and will have you hooked, reeled in, and swingin within mere minutes. The album, "One Hour Mama," is one sure to make it to the top of your ace list. Their timeless sound comes from obvious study of the masters of their instruments and of their musical style. The fabulous sound also comes from their use of classic, ageless, swingin, jazzy tunes. They are connoisseurs of good taste; they are one of the finest sounding bands on a whole that I have heard come out of the bumper crop of new bands. The vocal stylings of Lavay Smith are exceptional. Imagine, if you would, a smoother Billie Holiday. Lavay knows how to lay it on brassy and sassy or sweet and high-ladies and gents, shes one hell of a barn burner. She ranks right up there with Sarah, Ella, and Lena-and thats about the highest compliment I could give. Chris Siebert is the amazingly talented piano lead and arranger. Indeed, his adaptations of "Blue Skies," "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," and "Squeeze Me"-to name a few-have become some of my favorites. For you dancers, the music is usually too fast to lindy to, but heck, youre jitterbug will be sweet! And theres always the Charleston. For the slow songs, grab the one you lust after and go to town!
